Description
A final piece done with watercolor then touched up with digital edited with Photoshop. This is the machairodont felid Homotherium cf. crenatidens, also known as the Scimitar-cat. This individual is based off a skull (AMNH 95297) From the Blancan Delmont local Fauna in South Dakota and a lower jaw found in Texas. This skull is one of only two nearly complete specimens in North America.
Homotherium is considerd a specialist in hunting large prey especially proboscideans (elephants and kin) but is also known to have hunted rhinos, horses, and possbly camels.

Good to see another someone painting a homotherium. I get sick of seeing smilodons all the time... especially considering their hunting handicaps with having to protect those killer teeth. Homotherium was the better predator of the two in my opinion, possibly even the best of the feline predators, period. (After all, modern lions would be hard pressed to take down an African elephant today without having the right opportunity... it rarely happens that they do kill one.)
